Perdix Portal Launch and Exhibition

An art exhibition organised by Mark Upton will accompany the official launch of the Perdix Portal at the prestigious Bozar venue in Brussels on 10th and 11th May.

The show will open at 6pm on Wednesday 10th, and an evening reception on Thursday 11th will be attended by MEPs, European Commission officials, and representatives of hunting and falconry organisations.

Please join us if you can.

The Perdix Portal is a multilingual online hub for people working to re-establish the grey partridge, and the biodiversity that sustains it, across Europe.

Whether they are gamekeepers, estate managers, conservationists, farmers, bee-keepers or whole communities, the Portal enables the sharing of practical tools and advice, and country-specific information. The site will soon link to a network of regional Perdix sites in different languages.

IAF Council of Delegates Meeting 2017: Kyrgyzstan

The 48th IAF Council of Delegates Meeting will take place in Kyrgyzstan from Saturday 2nd to Thursday 7th September 2017.

The location is the stunning resort town of Cholpon-Ata, on high alpine meadows in the Tien Shan mountains, on the shores of the world’s second-largest saline lake, Issyk-Kul.

An IUCN and CMS conference on ‘The Illegal Trade in Raptors in Central Asia’ is planned alongside the meeting.

It will bring together conservation authorities from Central Asia and the Middle East, falconers, and representatives from IUCN and CMS to discuss the illegal trade of raptors in the region.

The meeting and conference will be hosted by Kyrgyzstan’s largest falconry organisation, the Salburun Federation, with the direct assistance of the Government of Kyrgyzstan, for whom the event is of national importance.

A week-long programme of activities will showcase Kyrgyz falconry heritage and nomadic traditions, including hunting with Golden eagles and taigan hounds, archery from horseback, food, dance, and hospitality.

Cholpon-Ata is already a hub for falconers and hunters from all over the world, who gather there every September to compete and show off their dexterity and skill at the Salbuurun festival.

The website and registration for the meeting will be launched soon and announced in an upcoming eBulletin. In the meantime, here is a short video showing what Kyrgyzstan has to offer...

Third of March was UN World Wildlife Day, with the theme ‘Listen to young voices’.

The IAF Young Falconers group and Women’s Working Group collaborated to produce the beautiful sketch video ‘Falconers for Wildlife’, which celebrates falconers’ role in conservation.

Primetime TV Spot for Australian Rehab Project

Falconry remains illegal in Australia but recent TV coverage of Michael Calvin’s rehabilitation programme helps show that falconry techniques are invaluable in helping injured or sick birds to return to the wild fit and able to survive.

Michael is part of the Raptor Rehabilition Association of Western Australia (RRAWA), which became a member of the IAF in 2015.

He talked to Today Tonight about the use of the lure, drone and GPS in the process of training Aggie, a juvenile female peregrine, to hunt.

Follow Aggie's journey on Facebook

Thanks, Michael, for another positive example of falconry and conservation going hand in hand!
