UNESCO Recognition Celebrated in Germany

The Deutscher Falkenorden (DFO) and Orden Deutscher Falkoniere (ODF) have led celebrations to mark the recent addition of German falconry to the UNESCO representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH).

Almost 400 people attended the event at Schloss Fasanerie, in Eichenzell near Fulda, on 10 June.

The ICH submission, prepared jointly by three IAF member clubs - the DFO, ODF,  and Verband Deutscher Falkner (VDF) - was approved in December 2016.

DFO Chairman Hans-Albrecht Hewicker thanked all fellow campaigners, including the IAF, the Emirates Falconers’ Club, and a number of individuals. He especially thanked H.E. Majid Al Mansouri (IAF Vice President for the MENA Region) for the leadership of the UAE in the UNESCO submission.

Dr Brigitta Ringbeck, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, acting as coordinator of the Cultural Conventions of UNESCO, then handed over the certificate of recognition in front of an enthusiastic audience to the presidents of the three German falconry associations - Mr Hewicker, Ralf Karthäuser (ODF), and Torsten Hamberger, (VDF).

Mr Hewicker also thanked the two main people responsible for the organization of the festival, DFO Secretary Anke Bormann, and Mr Ulrich Goldbach, member of the State Falconry Association of Hesse.

Guests received a tour of the castle and its many falconry-related artefacts, and in the evening were treated to a special reenactment of baroque horseback falconry by the Krischke family. A  buffet was followed by a party that many enjoyed well into the night.
